WILLA MAC refers to both the palace building situated along the
Pyynikki ridge as well as the new private art museum and a gallery situated
inside.
The building
The WILLA MAC building was built by a pharmacist by the name
of Haapanen along the Pyynikki ridge, a place of great natural
beauty. The villa was modeled on a Venetian palazzo and the
construction work was done using the best Finnish building know-how
at the time. At first, the building was used as a private home
after which it served, among other things, as a hostel and,
for a very long time, as the Modern Art Museum of Tampere. Today
the building is completely renovated and equipped with modern
technology. The reconstruction was done keeping in mind the
historical style of the building which is seen in the walls
made from massive Finnish granite and painted using the traditional
Italian Stucco-painting method.

WILLA MAC is an art museum, which has as the main function to present Finnish contemporary art in
an other way than the traditional museums. The museum has possibility to present
that kind of high-class artists and art, which can not be seen on exhibition elsewhere in respected surroundings.
WILLA MAC Gallery is organising also commercial exhibitions for guest artists. The museum is run by a small but
devoted staff who share a love of art. The opening hours are flexible in that meaning that doors
are open on request also outside the official service hours. We are developing collections, premises
and activities in the way that we can offer our visitors a good enjoyment of visual arts.
